Thievery
(Pick Pockets, Palm Object, Lockpick, Traps, Disable Traps, Forgery, Gambling)
Thievery includes all manner of abilities related to generally being shady.
Pick Pockets
This represents your ability to take something off someone else without their noticing. The object has to be reasonable in accessibility and size. This is usually a Thievery check against your target’s Notice [SP]. You cannot make an attempt to steal from someone if they are on high alert, such as during a combat encounter.
Situation | Modifier |
---|---|
The object is protected (e.g., in a pouch or inside a coat pocket) | (flip+1) to opponent’s Notice [SP] |
There are observers who may notice the action | Additional Notice [SP] checks may be required |
Results:
- Success: You successfully take the item without being detected.
- Failure: You fail to take the item, and your attempt may be noticed.
- Failure by a Large Margin: You are caught in the act, leading to immediate consequences.
Palm Object
This represents your ability to quickly take something and hide it before anyone notices. This is usually an opposed skill check with your Thievery versus the Notice [SP] of all creatures who are currently observing you.
Results:
- Success: You successfully palm the object without being noticed.
- Failure: You fail to hide the object, and your attempt may be noticed.
- Failure by a Large Margin: You are caught attempting to take and hide the object, leading to immediate consequences.
Lockpick
Sometimes you need to open something, and you don’t have a key. The difficulty of the check is determined by the quality of the lock. If you fail by a large margin, you may not be allowed to retry.
Lock Quality | Difficulty |
---|---|
Simple | Average (12+) |
Average | Hard (15+) |
Good | Very Hard (18+) |
Excellent | Near Impossible (21+) |
Legendary | Very Impossible (25+) |
Results:
- Success: You successfully pick the lock.
- Failure: You fail to pick the lock and may need to try again.
- Failure by a Large Margin: You are unable to retry, and the lock may be damaged or trigger an alarm.
Traps
This specialization involves the setting of traps. This is normally an unopposed skill check with your result determining how hard it will be to disarm the trap.
Results:
- Success: You set the trap effectively.
- Failure: The trap is set but may not function as intended.
- Failure by a Large Margin: The trap is faulty and may be easily disarmed or fail to trigger.
Disabling Traps and Devices
This skill doesn’t help you find them, but it does keep them from exploding in your face. The difficulty is based on the complexity of the trap, the skill result when the trap was created, and further modified by any tools you may have to help.
Trap Complexity | Difficulty |
---|---|
Simple trap | Easy (9+) |
Moderate trap | Average (12+) |
Complex trap | Hard (15+) |
Advanced trap | Very Hard (18+) |
Potential modifiers:
Circumstance | Modifier |
---|---|
You have specialized tools for disabling traps | (flip+1) |
The trap is in a hard-to-reach location | (flip-1) |
The trap is partially visible or obvious | (flip+1) |
Results:
- Success: The trap is successfully disarmed or disabled.
- Failure: The trap remains active, and another attempt may be necessary.
- Failure by a Large Margin: The trap is triggered, causing damage or other consequences.
Forgery
This specialization is related to the creation of fake documentation or other items. This is normally an unopposed skill check with your result determining how hard it will be to detect the imitation through the use of the Appraisal skill if your work is ever inspected.
Results:
- Success: The forgery is convincing and withstands scrutiny.
- Failure: The forgery is unconvincing or may be detected under close inspection.
- Failure by a Large Margin: The forgery is obviously fake and could lead to immediate suspicion or capture.
Gambling
Gambling is usually an Opposed Skill Check with all participants using the Thievery skill with the gambling specialization.
Results:
- Success: You win the gamble, potentially earning money or other rewards.
- Failure: You lose the gamble, losing money or resources.
- Failure by a Large Margin: You are caught cheating or otherwise suffer a major loss.
