First Aid

(Critical Care, Diagnostics, Long-Term Care, Poison, Disease, Surgery)

First Aid allows a character to identify and treat various types of injuries.

Critical Care

First Aid can be used to save someone who is dying (below 0 LETHAL). An Average (12+) First Aid check will stabilize a character and prevent additional loss of LETHAL. It will not heal damage, but the character will no longer bleed out.

Potential modifiers:

Circumstance Modifier
Patient is suffering from severe blood loss (flip-1)
Using improvised medical tools (shift-1)

Long-Term Care

Long-Term Care allows a character to improve the recovery time for LETHAL damage. Usually, LETHAL damage comes back at a rate of 1 point of LETHAL for each 8 hours spent without physical or mental exertion. An Average (12+) First Aid check will double that to 2 points of LETHAL for each 8 hours.

Potential modifiers:

Circumstance Modifier
Providing care without access to proper supplies (flip-1)
Providing care to multiple patients at once (shift-1) for each patient after the first

Poison

Treating poison will prevent a character from taking damage or other negative effects. The difficulty of the check is determined by the type of poison:

Type of Poison Difficulty
Common natural poisons (e.g., snake venom) Average (12+)
Rare or exotic poisons Hard (15+)
Synthetic or magically enhanced poisons Very Hard (18+)

Potential modifiers may include:

Circumstance Modifier
Using incomplete or incorrect antidote (flip-1)

Disease

Treating disease will prevent a character from taking damage or other negative effects. The difficulty of the check is determined by the type of disease. This can also be used to identify and control the spread of diseases by instituting safety procedures such as isolation and careful hygiene:

Type of Disease Difficulty
Common illnesses (e.g., cold, flu) Easy (9+)
Serious diseases (e.g., pneumonia) Average (12+)
Rare or exotic diseases Hard (15+)
Magically enhanced disease Very Hard (18+)

Surgery

Surgery is a type of First Aid that allows one to operate on a person. The difficulty of the skill check will depend on the complexity of the operation, the conditions, and the available tools:

Type of Procedure Difficulty
Simple wound cleaning and stitching Easy (9+)
Setting and splinting a broken bone Average (12+)
Complex internal surgery Hard (15+)
Life-saving surgery under poor conditions Very Hard (18+)

Potential modifiers may include:

Circumstance Modifier
Lack of proper tools (flip-1)
Operating under stressful conditions (e.g., battlefield surgery) (flip-1)
